First Light

This week I’m in Gisborne and this is the view from the hotel deck this morning. The cool thing about this is that apparently Gisborne is one of the first places in the world to see the sun, so as this is the first view of the sun this morning I could very well be the first person in the world to see the sun. Well that is if you don’t count people who have to go to work before the sun is even up.

Yesterday I received very bad news from America – Celine Dion has strained a vocal chord and has been ordered to have complete voice rest AGAIN, which means cancelled concerts. I am so angry and sad about this terrible news, I have been looking forward to going to the concert for so many years and finally I get to go and it’s only 14 more sleeps till I depart for America to see her.

Of course there will be plenty of other cool stuff to see and do and I’m still very excited about seeing my friends, Vegas, L.A. and San Francisco, but Celine was a pretty big highlight. My friend Amy has sent me some ideas for other concerts we could go to, but that doesn’t seem like a real good idea right now, as anything else will just be a huge disappointment, nothing could come close to a Celine concert in my world.

The White Lady

Now here’s a blast from the past. I went down to the Britomart Centre at lunch time yesterday to spend my $10 gift voucher the fabulous Kikki.K store sent me for my birthday and on my way back, I cut through Fort St and found the White Lady – wow, now that’s a blast from the past. I haven’t seen that thing for years, in fact I had completely forgotten all about it.

I wonder if the food is still as awesome as it used to be back in the 80s when I was a frequent customer there on Friday and Saturday nights.

Two Cruise Ships in the Harbour

Today downtown Auckland was a great place to be – very alive and full of tourists – two massive cruise ships were here for the day.  Was great to see so many people all come out at lunch time to have a look at the ships and soak up the sun.  Everybody down on the waterfront had cameras and I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people taking photos of a cruise ship before – it was very cool!

When the video first starts you might want to pause it to see the very brief glimpse of the Sun Princess.

Heroic Gardens 2012 Day Two

Day two of the garden festival was competely different from day one. This time we went round homes in the suburbs of Auckland, yesterday we visited vast country estates. Day two houses had stunning backyard gardens that you could imagine yourself creating if you had the time and money. Having said that some of the gardens were so spectacular they belonged in Holywood and I just didn’t want to leave.

Two of the gardens would have to be my most favourite gardens ever – they were just awesome. The weather was once again one of the best days we’ve had this year, gorgeous, sunny and hot. It’s been a fantastic weekend and given me renewed interest in my very own little garden.

This year the Heroic Gardens was different from previous years – there were several really large “gardens” included in an area called Coatesville which is now kinda famous thanks to Mr Dot.Com.

All six gardens we visited on day one were in Coatesville and they were all really large and certainly very impressive. This was not the Hero Gardens Festival as I know it, it’s evolved over the years into something much bigger than it used to be and as such has lost some of it’s charm, but that definitely does not mean it wasn’t fabulous coz it was and the “Twin Lakes” garden was my favourite Coatesville garden.

The weather was the most amazing weather we have had all year – very sunny and very hot – perfect for the garden festival. This photo was taken from a lovely spot under a palm tree where we could rest in the shade and soak up the incredibly peaceful atmosphere of this stunning garden.

Yesterday I took a casual wander around the local duty free store DFS (pictured above). I was quite excited because I wasn’t really window shopping – I could actually buy something if I wanted to and pay the duty free price coz I’m going overseas in just 30 more sleeps.

I ended up in the posh watch section where they have $25,000 watches etc with no intention of buying one, but I wondered if they still had the same watch I had always admired when I used to work in that duty free shop more than 14 years ago. In case you are curious it’s the Omega Constellation and yes they still have it but…

As I was standing there one of the staff called out my name – OMG!!! She remembered me from all those years ago – but what was more shocking – she’s still there!!! We had a wee catch up and apparently there are about four other staff members still there from the good old days who remember me – WOW.

Look What I Found

Today at lunch time Senior Fluffy and I went walking and we came across a brand new shop called The London Lolly Shop. I rushed in hoping to find the Jelly Babies my very special friends bring me from London when they return home or post me for Xmas, but not expecting to find them. Not only did I find the exact brand I love so much but a humongous box of them – yippee.

The Houses Project

20120201-202051.jpg

Yesterday I set out to take photos of the two houses I somehow completely forgot about when photographing for my next project. I still can’t believe I forgot all about them but that might hopefully explain to you why I haven’t managed to start the “Houses Project” like I said I would back in January.

To be honest I also kinda changed my mind thinking nobody would really be interested in it anyway, but a couple of people have said they’ve been looking forward to it so here goes.

Today’s photo is the only photo I managed to get of the first place I tried to photograph because I couldn’t find the house, so this is the view from the end of the road. Dad can’t remember the house number and I only lived there for a really short time when I was 4 so I didn’t know where it was either. I drove up and down the street looking but couldn’t see anything remotely familiar so maybe it’s gone. Plus I’m sure it’s not a good look to be driving slowly looking like I’m staking out the place for a burglary while in Remuera! There were massive Neighborhood Watch signs everywhere.

Not a Good Day

20120126-182338.jpg

When I woke up this morning I was very excited about flying to Wellington for the day. But the excitement changed to frustration at about 9:10 and as the day progressed things went from bad to worse! Right now I should be back in Auckland but I’m still at the airport in Wellington due to delays.

Here is what went wrong:

1) The taxi I ordered for 9:00 never turned up, I ordered another one but because I had waited so long I knew I would be cutting it fine for check in on my flight & as I was flying with Jetstar it was essential I was not late. Luckily I did make it on time.

2) The Jetstar flight was not too bad, but it was not great either. People who know me well have probably heard me say I never want to fly Jetstar ever again. But this is a work thing so I had no choice. So I was not surprised when a HUGE man squeezed himself into the seat next to me. I think he got an iPod for Xmas, coz he didn’t seem to know how to operate it properly and had awful music blaring out of it, he had headphones on and didn’t realise we could ALL hear what he was listening to, I guess the headphones weren’t plugged in properly. Thankfully he never did figure it out and didn’t bother to turn it back on after take off.

3) I decided to get Subway for lunch – so did everyone else! The queue was out the door.

4) I was in Wellington to train a group of people how to edit our intranet. Only 2 out of the 11 people turned up on time.

5) To edit the intranet you need special access rights which must be obtained before attending the course. This is explained VERY clearly in the email I send to people twice!!! 2 people did not have the correct rights & 2 people didn’t even know why they were doing the course or what they would need to do on the intranet. One had only been with us for three days and didn’t even know what the intranet is!!!

6) After about half an hour the intranet ground to a complete halt. I tried my best to entertain the people filling in time with other stuff while waiting for the intranet to come right. But after waiting 10 minutes I gave up. You can’t teach people how to edit the intranet if the intranet doesn’t work.

7) I phoned the “Help” desk to see if there was an issue. They were no help.

8) I phoned one of the IT Managers and he sorted it for me, but by this time we had sadly wasted about an hour & it’s only a two hour course. One person walked out.

9) The taxi I ordered to take me back to the airport was parked at the wrong entrance – again I had to phone the taxi company and find out what the hold up was.

10) Some sort of cable fell down on the road on the way to the airport and there was a big traffic jam. Luckily my taxi driver knew of a back way and I was not late for check in. As my return flight was with Air NZ I was not quite so stressed about being late as I was with Jetstar this morning.

11) After going through security, Air NZ announced my flight was delayed. Why did it take them that long to announce this or update the departure boards? When a plane is going to be more than an hour late arriving at an airport, surely they must know this way before they tell people to go to the gate!

12) With an extra hour to fill in I decided to have a meal – but everything looked old and manky. In utter desperation and as a result of no functioning brain cells left to help me decide what to eat I ordered a plate of fish and chips. And now I’m starting to regret that… I think I ate a dodgy fish, hope I don’t need to use the sick bag on the plane.

13) The flight was delayed two more times and it’s now more than 2 hours late.

14) The Jetstar flight to Auckland departed on time. I had to sit there and watch it take off, while I patiently waited for my beautiful Air NZ plane to turn up.

To be continued… We are about to depart 2 1/2 hours late.

It’s now 9:00 we have landed & thankfully I didn’t need to use a sick bag. But I can still feel the bad fish inside me. Anyway, I thought once we took off everything would be lovely and my mouth started watering for a beer, which is one of the perks of flying Air NZ: free beer! But of course in line with everything else that went wrong today the beer didn’t work out either…

15) Shortly after take off they announced that due to the delay in arriving at Wellington the catering company had closed and were not able to provide any food or beverages. I had a choice of water, coffee, tea, a chocolate biscuit or airplane lollies. I chose nothing.

16) My taxi drive home of course was not without incident. My lady driver is an inspector and spent the first 15 minutes sorting out naughty taxi drivers, by reporting them to head office, quoting the law and generally not concentrating on the road. I thought I was going to die!!!

17) After the reporting was done she settled back in her seat and got chatty to me. Her driving did not improve, it was terrible she did a lot of swerving between lanes and nearly ended up coming off the motorway because she left it too long to change lanes. She even answered her cell phone when it rang!

18) At last the taxi pulls up outside my house, I hand her my charge card and she has to look up some list of codes to enter into the machine. I’ve never had that happen before in all the years I’ve been using the card. She took ages to figure it all out and got it wrong. As she hands me my receipt she looks at it and said oh I’m sorry I’ve put in the international airport, will that matter? I can’t see how it would make any difference to my work, in fact I doubt they even check those details, just the amount etc. But mostly I just wanted to be home, so I said don’t worry about it. It’s now about 10pm and I’m very tired and have run out of patience. She thanked me and handed me back my card and said goodnight. I’m supposed to sign the receipt, but clearly she didn’t want me to so I got out, said goodnight and now here I am. I’ve just looked at the taxi receipt and it turns out she took sooooo long to process the transaction, it timed out and did NOT go through after all that.

And just think… I get to do it all again in 6 weeks time.
