The Houses Project

20120201-202051.jpg

Yesterday I set out to take photos of the two houses I somehow completely forgot about when photographing for my next project. I still can’t believe I forgot all about them but that might hopefully explain to you why I haven’t managed to start the “Houses Project” like I said I would back in January.

To be honest I also kinda changed my mind thinking nobody would really be interested in it anyway, but a couple of people have said they’ve been looking forward to it so here goes.

Today’s photo is the only photo I managed to get of the first place I tried to photograph because I couldn’t find the house, so this is the view from the end of the road. Dad can’t remember the house number and I only lived there for a really short time when I was 4 so I didn’t know where it was either. I drove up and down the street looking but couldn’t see anything remotely familiar so maybe it’s gone. Plus I’m sure it’s not a good look to be driving slowly looking like I’m staking out the place for a burglary while in Remuera! There were massive Neighborhood Watch signs everywhere.

Not a Good Day

20120126-182338.jpg

When I woke up this morning I was very excited about flying to Wellington for the day. But the excitement changed to frustration at about 9:10 and as the day progressed things went from bad to worse! Right now I should be back in Auckland but I’m still at the airport in Wellington due to delays.

Here is what went wrong:

1) The taxi I ordered for 9:00 never turned up, I ordered another one but because I had waited so long I knew I would be cutting it fine for check in on my flight & as I was flying with Jetstar it was essential I was not late. Luckily I did make it on time.

2) The Jetstar flight was not too bad, but it was not great either. People who know me well have probably heard me say I never want to fly Jetstar ever again. But this is a work thing so I had no choice. So I was not surprised when a HUGE man squeezed himself into the seat next to me. I think he got an iPod for Xmas, coz he didn’t seem to know how to operate it properly and had awful music blaring out of it, he had headphones on and didn’t realise we could ALL hear what he was listening to, I guess the headphones weren’t plugged in properly. Thankfully he never did figure it out and didn’t bother to turn it back on after take off.

3) I decided to get Subway for lunch – so did everyone else! The queue was out the door.

4) I was in Wellington to train a group of people how to edit our intranet. Only 2 out of the 11 people turned up on time.

5) To edit the intranet you need special access rights which must be obtained before attending the course. This is explained VERY clearly in the email I send to people twice!!! 2 people did not have the correct rights & 2 people didn’t even know why they were doing the course or what they would need to do on the intranet. One had only been with us for three days and didn’t even know what the intranet is!!!

6) After about half an hour the intranet ground to a complete halt. I tried my best to entertain the people filling in time with other stuff while waiting for the intranet to come right. But after waiting 10 minutes I gave up. You can’t teach people how to edit the intranet if the intranet doesn’t work.

7) I phoned the “Help” desk to see if there was an issue. They were no help.

8) I phoned one of the IT Managers and he sorted it for me, but by this time we had sadly wasted about an hour & it’s only a two hour course. One person walked out.

9) The taxi I ordered to take me back to the airport was parked at the wrong entrance – again I had to phone the taxi company and find out what the hold up was.

10) Some sort of cable fell down on the road on the way to the airport and there was a big traffic jam. Luckily my taxi driver knew of a back way and I was not late for check in. As my return flight was with Air NZ I was not quite so stressed about being late as I was with Jetstar this morning.

11) After going through security, Air NZ announced my flight was delayed. Why did it take them that long to announce this or update the departure boards? When a plane is going to be more than an hour late arriving at an airport, surely they must know this way before they tell people to go to the gate!

12) With an extra hour to fill in I decided to have a meal – but everything looked old and manky. In utter desperation and as a result of no functioning brain cells left to help me decide what to eat I ordered a plate of fish and chips. And now I’m starting to regret that… I think I ate a dodgy fish, hope I don’t need to use the sick bag on the plane.

13) The flight was delayed two more times and it’s now more than 2 hours late.

14) The Jetstar flight to Auckland departed on time. I had to sit there and watch it take off, while I patiently waited for my beautiful Air NZ plane to turn up.

To be continued… We are about to depart 2 1/2 hours late.

It’s now 9:00 we have landed & thankfully I didn’t need to use a sick bag. But I can still feel the bad fish inside me. Anyway, I thought once we took off everything would be lovely and my mouth started watering for a beer, which is one of the perks of flying Air NZ: free beer! But of course in line with everything else that went wrong today the beer didn’t work out either…

15) Shortly after take off they announced that due to the delay in arriving at Wellington the catering company had closed and were not able to provide any food or beverages. I had a choice of water, coffee, tea, a chocolate biscuit or airplane lollies. I chose nothing.

16) My taxi drive home of course was not without incident. My lady driver is an inspector and spent the first 15 minutes sorting out naughty taxi drivers, by reporting them to head office, quoting the law and generally not concentrating on the road. I thought I was going to die!!!

17) After the reporting was done she settled back in her seat and got chatty to me. Her driving did not improve, it was terrible she did a lot of swerving between lanes and nearly ended up coming off the motorway because she left it too long to change lanes. She even answered her cell phone when it rang!

18) At last the taxi pulls up outside my house, I hand her my charge card and she has to look up some list of codes to enter into the machine. I’ve never had that happen before in all the years I’ve been using the card. She took ages to figure it all out and got it wrong. As she hands me my receipt she looks at it and said oh I’m sorry I’ve put in the international airport, will that matter? I can’t see how it would make any difference to my work, in fact I doubt they even check those details, just the amount etc. But mostly I just wanted to be home, so I said don’t worry about it. It’s now about 10pm and I’m very tired and have run out of patience. She thanked me and handed me back my card and said goodnight. I’m supposed to sign the receipt, but clearly she didn’t want me to so I got out, said goodnight and now here I am. I’ve just looked at the taxi receipt and it turns out she took sooooo long to process the transaction, it timed out and did NOT go through after all that.

And just think… I get to do it all again in 6 weeks time.

I Found Jesus

Some of you may remember before Xmas I was slightly concerned that Baby Jesus had gone missing from the Nativity scene outside the school I walk past on my way to work.

Of course I had no idea whether the baby statue had been nicked or they couldn’t find it & had to build another one. Or is this how the whole nativity thing plays out… Jesus doesn’t appear till the 25th of December. So I asked a couple of people but they didn’t know either.

Anyway, whatever the reason, the baby Jesus has miraculously appeared – it’s a Christmas Miracle.

My Auckland

My Auckland

Today was the last day of my holidays, so I wanted to do something different and special. So I came up with a plan to photograph all the Auckland homes I’ve ever lived in from when I was born right up to now. This would cover several goals all in one little adventure:

  • go for a drive so I could try out the latest upgraded Tom Tom maps I got for Xmas
  • take a trip down memory lane
  • make a powerpoint presentation of photos for Dad of places we lived in
  • do some photography that I could use to start a fun new blog project and
  • maybe do something with the pics on my website.

My adventure was EPIC. Well not quite as active or exciting as Tin Tin’s adventures but fun, fascinating, educational, successful, surprising and inspiring. I even got stuck in an Auckland traffic jam heading for the bridge and got a bit sunburnt on my right arm – bet nobody thought you could get a suntan this holiday coz the weather has been so appalling – but I did.

I managed to photograph all the houses even though I completely forgot about three of them and remembered while on the motorway requiring some clever & quick manoeuvring to change directions while approaching Spaghetti Junction which is not the best place to be trying to do that. But Tom Tom had me back on track very quickly.

At the very first place I went to I noticed the people were home so I got very brave and knocked on the door asking for permission to photograph the house. I don’t normally just bowl on up to random strangers and ask to photograph their house, but you couldn’t really see much of the house from the road because of the fence and gardens. The amazingly kind lady said yes of course I could and even invited me in to look around the inside of the house – wow! Unfortunately I don’t really remember much about that house coz that home was where I spent the first 4 years of my life and my earliest memories of that home are a bit hazy now. The hallway sort of looked a bit familiar, but I imagine they have done a fair bit of renovating since then with added bits and knocking down walls etc. While wandering around outside I said to the lady: “wouldn’t it be terrible, after all this, if I was at the wrong house”.

So…  from tomorrow I will start my new blog project called: Places I have lived.

New Year’s Eve – The Movie

20120105-210517.jpg

Tonight I went to the movies to see New Year’s Eve. It was awesome – I loved it. Of course it really was a lot like Valentine’s Day (the movie) but that was awesome too, so that’s a good thing.

I realise you were probably supposed to go see the movie before New Year’s Eve (or even on the big night itself, now that would’ve been cool) but I’m not sure if I wish I had or not. Of course the movie made me feel like going out and doing new years all over again, but then wouldn’t that lead to disappointment if the real thing was nothing like the movie? But it has certainly inspired me for next time and the rest of the year – if you have seen the movie you will know what I mean.

Anyway, on the way in to the cinema complex in Newmarket I looked up and noticed the roof (see photo above) its very cool indeed and I’ve never even noticed it before. I showed my friend the photo after I took it and she said she wanted to dance on it 🙂

Happy New Year everybody!

There were sheep and cows and horses and dogs. Plus they even have wild rabbits just sitting there in the back yard. I saw one and got all excited – my friend said: “oh yeah I know terrible nuisance, they’re everywhere”. However I felt like I had arrived at Watership Down – it was so cool.

Before lunch we went for a big walk out to a place where people can ride horses or bikes on special purpose built tracks and the council have planted all these pohutukawa trees everywhere, even though they were quite young trees they were still old enough to produce the most stunningly red flowers for Xmas.

It’s Raining

It’s Raining

It’s the day before New Year’s Eve and it won’t stop raining. I’m half way through my end of year holidays and the weather has been so depressing, usually at this time of year the weather is great; sunny and hot – up till yesterday it was so windy I couldn’t even open the windows or my Xmas trees would blow over.

Yesterday I was craving some fresh air so I devised a clever system of clamping an upstairs window open just slightly to allow air into the room but not enough to blow everything around.  My clever system consisted of a big plastic clamp and a velcro strip attaching the window handle to the clamp.  I have used this clamp thingy for about a year now very successfully.  BUT the wind yesterday was so strong I heard several big bangs while reading a book and it took me a while to realise it was my window that made that banging noise and realised the clamp must not have worked allowing the window to slam shut.  So I ran upstairs to see the damage and sure enough the window was closed – the velcro strap was still there but the clamp was nowhere to be found.  I went outside and looked around but I couldn’t see it – it’s gone!  I hope it didn’t fly down and hit somebody or something – being hit by a largish plastic clamp thrown at you from 3 floors up would really hurt, but where is it?

Christmas Shopping

At lunch time today we went to Smith & Caughey’s to check out their Xmas window display. This year there is a series of scenes from a children’s story about Christmas. The expressions on the puppets faces are wonderful. The whole viewing experience was made magical by the Celine Dion Xmas music I could hear playing inside the store.

The Xmas tree in the photo above is the very impressive Atrium on Elliot tree, they have a fabulous display of Xmas trees and icicle lights throughout the shopping centre and most of the trees have nothing but blue lights in them… Need I say more!!!
