Sydney Day Two

Friday, 13 February 2015 – My Birthday

Up early to check out the view from the roof top swimming pool before the champagne breakfast with my friends who had flown to Sydney to help me celebrate my 50th birthday in style.

After breakfast and many glasses of fabulous champagne we set off for the Harbour bridge so I could take photos of the Opera House. Along the way we walked past the Sydney Tower and many beautiful buildings and stopped at a Starbucks to give us the strength required for the big walk across the bridge.

As we approached the bridge even the weather god wanted to help us celebrate my birthday by presenting us with clear blue skies.  The view of the city and the Opera House was stunning and I just couldn’t get enough of photographing everything.

One of my friends and I even walked up hundreds of stairs to check out the view from the Pylon Lookout. Up the lookout was a movie, spectacular views and even a shop.

Next we walked around Circular Quay all the way to the Opera House itself so I could touch it.

Once inside we headed to the shop where I found the Lego version of the Opera House. That was so cool coz it was the Opera House inside the Opera House.

Check out my Lego blog to see the one I built back in April:

After exploring the Opera House we had a pre-dinner cocktail in one of the harbour-side bars. I think the drink was called a Sydney Sling which seemed appropriate.

On the way back to the hotel we stopped at the incredible QV shopping mall where I found an amazing toy shop and bought an Air New Zealand jumbo jet model. I wanted to buy this particular model because Air NZ don’t fly Boeing 747s anymore.

The last part of my birthday was spent up the Sydney Tower in the revolving restaurant “Orbit”. The evening was fabulous, great company, great food and spectacular views. The staff even suprised us with a Happy Birthday plate decorated in chocolate words.

Sydney Day One

Thursday, 12 February 2015

Too excited for words, we arrived at the airport to check in for our flight to Sydney.  This was the first time I could use the self-check in with my new passport which made everything so easy.

The flight to Sydney was loads of fun with great service.  However the plane was delayed a bit due to its late arrival from somewhere, so it was very exciting to finally see it dragged in to place.

The weather forecast was for thunderstorms so it was very exciting to arrive in Sydney on a sunny and only slightly cloudy day, We were even sitting on the best side of the plane so we got a great view of Sydney and the Opera House before landing.

After dumping our bags we walked along Pitt St to make the most of the late night shopping at the massive Westfield Mall.

Holiday Blog Day One

December 19 – Friday

My holiday has officially begun. I finished work today at 12:00 and went straight home.

This morning we had a team brunch at a new place called Miami near work. I wanted to go there coz I was drawn to the blue lights. Nice food and lovely service.

When I got home the weather was too good to sit inside and do LEGO (which was the plan), so I dragged the sun umbrella out and had a couple of beers.

This was an excellent choice as it inspired me to get busy in my little garden and finally put up the Xmas lights I bought ages ago but just never got round to putting up.

At one point it turned out to be a stupid idea, coz the lights got all tangled up and standing in the hot sun with no shade trying to untangle them was far too hard and I gave up and had another beer. After a well deserved beer and rest I managed to finish off the lights.

It’s now dark enough to sit outside have a beer and enjoy my handy work.

My Day Off in the Sun

I have managed to accumulate a bit of annual leave and as I don’t have any big training projects on at the moment I decided to take a couple of days off.  It feels like it’s been raining forever lately so I couldn’t believe my luck when the weather forecast came true and the very first day of my extra long weekend was a beautiful warm sunny and cloudless day.

A friend of mine also had the day off so we spent it together visiting a couple of the beaches I used to hang out at in the weekends when I was growing up.  I had a great time photographing the scenery and retelling tales of my youth.

First stop was Mairangi Bay where we also enjoyed lunch in a lovely little cafe located in the Gables – a building the architect my Mum worked with designed and worked in.

There was a bunch of retired folk setting out on a walk around the rocks which my friend thought was cool – aparently people don’t get out quite so much where she comes from.

Next stop was the bay I spent most summer weekends sunbathing and swimming at: Campbells Bay, which is also the name of the primary school I went to.

From there we headed round to Castor Bay and up to Forrest Hill to enjoy the view of the city.

Next we drove through Milford and stopped to walk along the “Golden Mile”.

Our last stop was Lake Pupuke where the lakeside cafe was still open so we could enjoy a great cup of coffee.

Thank you Barbara for a really lovely day.

Christchurch 2014

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to go to Christchurch for a whole week of work.  It’s still a major work in progress and at times a sad and depressing place to walk around, especially as it got cold and dark very quickly after work making it hard to take photos.

There were a couple of things I really hoped to photograph and I’m glad the rain held off just long enough to allow me to do that.  Firstly I wanted to see the “Cardboard Cathedral.  Didn’t look much like it was made out of cardboard to me, so I’m not sure why they’ve called it that, but it did look warm and inviting.

The other thing I really wanted to see was the 185 Chairs Memorial, which i just don’t have the words to describe how I felt after seeing it.

The original Cathedral sadly is still a powerful reminder of the terrible devastation the beautiful city went through.

Everywhere you look there are plenty of reminders of the earthquake and I was really suprised how much work still has to be done.

There were several happy highlights though and apart from having dinner with a friend who used to work with me in Auckland plus having a fun week of work with the Christchurch staff I also turned a corner and found Libby & Ben’s shop. I had no idea they had set up a shop in Christchurch. I don’t know them, but they were my fave contestants in the 2012 Block NZ TV show.

Incredibly Bad Day – 7 April 2014

timaru

Today started out beautifully, got to have a wee sleep in coz I am flying to Timaru for work and not leaving till 11:00, so I got to work from home for the morning.  The sun was shining the birds were singing and I was quite excited about my little trip to Timaru and Christchurch for the week (I’ve never been to Timaru before).

I turned on my laptop at my normal work time and that was when the first problem occurred – Outlook just didn’t work on my Laptop at home using VPN, it works fine at work just not at home, had to phone the help desk to get it sorted.

Then after about 5 minutes of work the VPN cut out and nothing worked – 5 minutes later it worked again and 5 minutes after that it didn’t work.  This was so frustrating that I nearly threw the laptop out the window and gave up!!!

Anyway – the taxi turned up on time and the drive out to the airport was trouble free.  BUT Wellington airport was suffering from a condition called “Low Cloud” and this was disrupting flights all over the country and my 1:00 pm flight to Wellington didn’t actually get away till 2:00 pm which doesn’t sound too bad, but it meant I couldn’t make my connecting flight to Timaru which departed on time at 2:20.  So once I arrived in Wellington I had to wait till 6:00 pm for the next flight to Timaru.  Unfortunately I didn’t start walking towards the departure gate till the very last minute and then I couldn’t find the gate I was supposed to be at (Gate 19) – consequently my NAME was called over the loud speakers and I had to run!  Thankfully that flight did depart on time but I arrived at 7:20 in Timaru in the rain and it was dark!

That’s when the day got worse!!!

Hertz rental staff were nowhere to be seen – so the kind lady at Avis sorted me out, she knew where the bag of keys for Hertz rental cars is kept – they are quite good friends apparently!  I found the car, started up my GPS which I spent quite a bit of time on Sunday setting up with the addresses I needed for the whole week AND IT MALFUNCTIONED – it would not accept my password.  After many restarts I had to give up, admit defeat and try something else.  So there I was, stuck in an unfamiliar place, the airport had closed (nobody home), it was dark and I had no idea of where I was or which way to go!!!

Thank goodness for my iPhone – I was able to type where I wanted to go and it told me – but this wasn’t actually an easy place to get to from the airport and I found out later it guided me a really weird way but at least I got there.  It was 8:30 pm I was tired a tad stressed and not happy – I had missed Shortland St.

The place I was staying in was really nice – separate bedroom, choice of beds and they were massive, plus a fabulous huge spa bath.  Not sure if I was hungry or not, so headed out in search of my place of work tomorrow and a McDonalds.  After eating I felt a strange sensation in one of my teeth and I think I lost a filling!!!

Back in the room I decided to iron tomorrow’s shirt and the most random thing ever happened.  The pocket somehow strangely got caught between the iron’s hot plate and the plastic the hot plate is attached to.  In all my years of ironing this has never happened.  I could not pull the pocket out of the iron!  So I turned the iron off and tugged and tugged, eventually it did come away a little worse for wear but not bad enough to throw away (the shirt not the iron) – thank goodness coz it’s one of my favourite shirts.

The photo is of the Timaru Courthouse, a beautifully restored building.  Timaru seemed like a really “charming place with lots of beautiful old buildings.  Sadly I only got the chance to photograph one of them before I headed to Christchurch with only my iPhone and a hand drawn map (courtesy of a Timaru local) to guide me.

Calm Before the Storm

Calm Before the Storm

For several days we were warned about a massive cyclone that would strike on Friday night and last all weekend long. I was quite worried and wondered if I should at least drag my outdoor furniture into the lounge till it was all over. But the last time we had a warning about a massive storm nothing happened and it was coming in from the East and my backyard is sheltered from the east, so I didn’t bother.

Turned out to be a wise move. The storm didn’t really have any major impact on Auckland at all. I even had to water the garden on Sunday due to the lack of rain!
