Thank You India

What a beautiful sunrise we had the other morning, simply stunning, this was followed by a beautiful day, clear, crisp and fresh.  With no clouds to hold in the warmth it was really cold in the evening and I started thinking about turning on the heater – but it feels like it was only a couple of weeks ago that I had the air con on cooling things down.  So I resisted the urge to turn on a heater and put warmer clothes on instead.

A really lovely thing happened on the way home the other night… our bus driver stopped the bus in rush hour traffic – got out of the bus, walked about 10 meters up the road amongst traffic, bent over and picked something up.  When he got back on the bus I saw it was a mobile phone.  He dusted it off and put it with the money.  Now most people would have either ignored the phone on the busy road or tried to run it over, but not our wonderful “Birkenhead Bus” drivers, they are different.  This morning’s bus driver was a lady in her 50s and she was so friendly, she actually said thank you and goodbye to every single passenger as they got on and off the bus.  When a big bunch of us all got off at the same stop she called out: “thank you guys”.

Today while browsing around my local $2.00 shop at lunch time I found a strip of button type batteries for $2.00, this shouldn’t be such a big shock as it is a $2 shop, but the strip contained 10 batteries and normally I pay more than $2 for just one of those batteries.  As soon as I got home I ripped into my 10 pack and used 6 of them in a couple of those way cool light up glasses which haven’t lit up for more than three years coz I never got round to splashing out enough money to buy the batteries to make them light up again.  I’m happy to report that just like the full price batteries – they work.

So why is today’s blog called Thank You India???  This morning I heard the song Thank U by Alanis Morissette and it’s been stuck in my head all day and I love the lyrics… Thank you India, thank you terror, thank you disillusionment, thank you frailty, thank you consequence, thank you, thank you silence.

Devonport Chocolates

I got a call this morning from “Fluffy” to tell me Devonport Chocolates had opened up in the Queen’s Arcade. So guess where we went at lunch time for a quick look!

It was fabulous. It’s a very cool shop with very old style chocolate boxes on display just like what you would find in a museum. And they have cherry liquor chocolates too. So I’ll be back.

The Ladder

The funniest thing happened the other day, although this was not funny for the guys it happened to, their boss, or the company that owns the building.

While sitting at my desk I heard a big crash outside. So I got up to look out the window to see if I could see anything. There were two guys standing on top of an atrium roof. One was on a cell phone shaking his head the other was furiously scrubbing the roof with a broom and because it was a very windy day, their ladder had blown over – smashing a skylight and leaving them a bit stuck up there. Luckily one of them had a cell phone and must have called someone for help.

About 10 minutes later a guy dressed in a suit turned up and helped put the ladder back where where they could secure it to the building properly. 10 minutes after that two more guys turned up to cover up the broken skylight hole with a bit of wood.

A bit of excitement for the afternoon 🙂

On Yer Bike

Last weekend I went away with a group of people to experience something called “On Yer Bike”.  It was AWESOME, I loved it.  Basically you rent a bike from the “On Yer Bike” company in the Hawkes Bay and ride to a whole bunch of fabulous vineyards trying as many wines as you like.  Because you’re on a bike you don’t even have to worry about drink driving – but you do have to worry about falling off your bike.

The company provide you with a bike, helmets, maps, packed lunch, backup support and a collection service to gather up all the wine you have purchased so you don’t have to worry about it getting broken or heavy while riding around.  All this for just $50 – it was well worth it, I totally recommend it and would love to do it again.

After lunch at Te Rau our first stop was the Huka Falls.

Huka Falls

Ever since visiting the falls many years ago and missing out on photographing them, I had wanted to return one day to photograph them.  Unbelievably all those years ago (before digital cameras) just as I was about to take a photo I realised I had run out of film!  Luckily there is a shop at the falls which sells stuff and back then I could buy film.  I loaded up the film, got all excited and then the battery went flat.  The shop did not sell the type of battery my camera needed, so I was doomed.

Rothmans Art Deco Building

It has been a dream of mine for a very long time to go to Napier and take photos of the famous Art Deco buildings in Napier.  On our way to Havelock North we made a special stop so I could photograph the most iconic of all the Napier buildings – the Rothmans building, now called the National Tobacco Company building.

At the start of the bike ride it was a bit like the Amazing Race on TV, coz everybody rushed towards the bikes to make sure they got a good one. Funny thing was I had raved to everybody for days how I wanted a bike with a flag, coz it would be just like when I was 12 years old and had a purple “Chopper” with a big orange safety flag. But when I tried to get onto a bike with a flag, I got stuck with the flag caught between my legs, felt very stupid and rushed for a bike without a flag, giving everybody the excuse that the seat was too high on that bike and never mind I could do without a flag!

After all that wine tasting this is what I bought.  A wee collection of goodies from my favourite three vineyards.

Song for charity

Lionel Ritchie has re-recorded one of his huge hits from the 80s with Guy Sebastion to raise money for two very worthy charities: the Queensland floods and the Christchurch earthquake. I had a feeling I would like the song but didn’t care too much how good it was, I just wanted to buy the song as another way to donate money to the earthquake appeal. But I love it.

I love it so much that today I decided to go to JB HiFi to buy the single again on disk which would cost more than what I paid in iTunes but it would be a worthy cause, however; they told me if it was realeased as a CD it would cost money to produce and ship it so they wouldn’t make as much money for the charities as they would from pure sales in iTunes.

I realise this is a very good point but I still think it would be nice to have the actual CD.  Apparently they don’t sell singles anymore, but I’m sure they do… at the Warehouse.

Anyway… you should all have a listen and buy it as a way to donate a liitle bit more to the earthquake appeal.

Heroic Gardens

Heroic Gardens

On the 6th of March – about two weeks ago – I went to the Heroic Gardens Festival. As always it was a wonderful day out and even though I went to many of the same gardens it didn’t matter, because there’s always something different. It’s also nice to see how things have grown or changed.

This morning I had two lady friends come to my place for brunch. Now as you may know I don’t cook so the thought of trying to cook breakfast for three people was overwhelming. However it all went really well, everyone liked the food and one of the ladies even said: “Well how am I going to top that when it’s my turn”. Yay!!!

You may also know I can’t multi-task and trying to cook and listen to the conversation was just too hard so I switched off my listening skills and concentrated on the food. This however turned into hysterical laughter as I miss-heard a fairly commonly used phrase and had to ask my friend to repeat what she just said. She is a very lovely lady with much class who certainly doesn’t have a “potty mouth”. So imagine how shocked I was when I thought I heard her say: “Well Barb, what can you do, you have to laugh or you’ll FART”.

St Patrick’s Day

My tribute to St Patrick’s Day involved food rather than alcohol this year.

I bought a yummy Irish green cupcake from the coffee shop.  When I asked the guy what flavour it was he said: “ummm dunno… Riverdance maybe.   Riverdance doesn’t sound very delicious to me, it made me think of sweating Irish dancers.

Actually it was delicious… it was lemon flavour!

The Garden Center

Last weekend I went to the Heroic Gardens Festival it was wonderful as always, but this time I really got inspired to tidy up my own garden and buy some fresh new plants.

While at the garden centre I noticed the Monarch Butterflys were hatching and flying around. It was such a cool sight, that I had to take a photo of one.

Now, I wouldn’t have thought that it was such a strange or fascinating thing to do, but very quickly I attracted quite a bit of attention. I heard this talking and turned to see a bunch of about five people watching me. I guess taking photos in a garden centre is not such a common thing. And I was just using my cell phone camera, imagine the crowd if I had an actual camera with a zoom lens!

On Yer Bike

In March I’m off to Hawkes Bay for a Vineyard Tour on a bike with some friends.  As I hadn’t ridden a bike for many years we thought it might be a good idea to have a practice first.  So today we got up early and headed off to Hobsonville for a leisurely practice.

It was so cool.  I loved it, felt just like a kid again whizzing all over the place just like I did when I was 12.  We enjoyed it so much we’re going to do it again next weekend.

Initially when we booked the wine tour thingy I was looking forward to getting away for a weekend, doing a bit of photography, doing something really different and trying all sorts of wines.  The bike riding part simply meant I didn’t have to worry about drinking and driving but would probably be a bit of fun (not too sure).  However after this morning I’m really looking forward to the bike riding part the most!

All this for only $4.90

On my birthday Subway sent me an email wishing me a happy birthday and offering me a free cookie & drink.  I thought that was really cool, so I printed the voucher and made the effort to go before it expired.  That day came on Friday.

The other cool thing about all of this is that I downloaded the Subway App for my phone ages ago and have never used it before.  So on Friday I thought I would try it out.  It was so cool, it’s just like being there you can choose absolutely everything right down to pepper or salt or both, pick up time and whether or not you want a plastic bag to carry it away in.

After you have placed your order there is even an option that gives you directions to the Subway store you ordered it from using Google Maps.

I turned up went straight to the cashier, paid for it and was gone, all in under a minute… WOW!

Oh and if you have a Subway membership card you can even check your points with it.
